THE PSYCHOLOGIST
What a psychologist is, it vastly different from the prevailing perspective in society, such as the belief that psychologists have the answers to everything, that they can read minds, that they can find magical solutions to all problems, or that they are crazy people.
The role of psychologist is -by creating a safe and non-judgmental environment- to analyze the emotions, thoughts and behaviors of the individuals through assessments, active listening, targeted questions and interventions. Thereafter, she or he will try to understand how these elements were formed, how they influence and affect one another and consequently, how they reflected in our daily lives. Subsequently, the psychologist strive to help individuals identify dysfunctional patterns, develop new ways of thinking and acquire new strategies and skills to cope with and overcome whatever troubles or distress them.
A psychologist is not someone who will tell you what to do. Instead, they are the ones who will assist you through proper guidance to discover the ways, strength, and answers that already exist within you but it may be difficult for you to see.
Just like all human beings, psychologists are not exempt from the challenge of inner struggle. Perhaps the recognition of this struggle was the reason some of them were initially drawn to this field. Maybe introspection came as a natural evolution through their education. However, the result, in any case, remains the same. In order to help, it is essential to feel that once you were helped. In order to give, you must have received. And in order to guide someone, you must first know where you are going yourself.
